Top two accomplishments in community service/volunteerism:
I taught a young man with ADHD, autism, and dyslexia how to read the summer that he was going into 9th grade. He had been failed by the public education system in his area, and allowed to pass through elementary and middle school without being able to read. Over the course of six weeks, we met several times a week for an hour, learning the alphabet and phonetics, ultimately building up to reading short words. I believe that I gave him a fighting chance in high school, and showed him that he is loved.
Every Saturday I run a camp for middle school aged boys where we play sports, talk about God, and learn about forgiveness and reconciliation. This is a very important skill for these boys to learn, as many of them experience gang violence.
