Q: Why did you choose IUPUI?
A: I chose IUPUI because of the number of hospitals affiliated with the university, which is perfect for a nursing major. Becoming a member of the Honors College was also tremendously exciting because I wanted a university where I could have a community of like-minded individuals. Lastly, living in a city sounded like a fun new adventure that I could not pass up.
Q: What does being a Bepko Scholar mean to you?
A: Being a Bepko Scholar means I get to serve those who have served me. I do this by giving back to the Indianapolis community through regular volunteering and by being an active member of IUPUI's honor's clubs and events. I find Bepko Scholars to be upstanding role-models for the rest of the school, so it is extremely humbling to carry the title.
Top two accomplishments in community service/volunteerism:
One of my top accomplishments through volunteerism was my part as a board member for the nonprofit Amani Partners Kenya. Along with my team, we were able to organize a gala event last year to fundraise around $65,000 towards a medical facility in Ekerenyo, Kenya. I helped with advertising, collecting silent auction donations, and decision making such as location and food.
Another service experience was when I worked for a soup kitchen called the Evansville Chrisitan Life Center. I acted as a waitress and became very connected to the underprivileged in my hometown. It was a lot of hard work and not always glorified considering the food messes, constant cleaning, and hours of preparation, but it made me grow in my leadership ability.
